FOCUS AREAS

Recreational Area

The recreational area is designed to provide the inmates with a space to relax, socialize and play games. The ceiling design is intended to mock the geometric shapes of leaves. The lights puncturing through the structure are meant to represent photosynthesis that occurs to keep the flower alive. The cluster seating in the space is fixed, while the benches and seats connect to create a soft, flowing structure inspired by the shape of the Golgi apparatus found in a plant cell. The game tables are placed in the further corner to allow for a slight isolation from the rest of the space.

Since the recreational area has a ceiling height of 11 m, there was an abundance of space to explore with. There is a suspended wood structure in the center of the room with the lights passing through it. This structure is very simple and adds a creative and safe feature to the space. The remainder of the space has multiple indirect/direct suspended light fixtures that evenly distribute the light and allow for flexibility in the space.
